The series concluded last year with Last Sacrifice. GalleyCat has learned more exclusive details about Bloodlines, the forthcoming Vampire Academy spin-off series.

Q: What characteristics of the Vampire Academy series will be retained in the spin-off, Bloodlines?
A: We’re essentially keeping the same paranormal world, so we’ll have all the same creatures and rules that we know from the first series—along with many of the same characters. And even though the narrator has a different style from Rose [Hathaway], many of the things readers know from my writing will be there: humor, lots of emotion, and those dreaded cliffhangers!

 Q: Can you give any hint about which sideline character will be featured as a main protagonist in Bloodlines?
A: More than a hint actually! I’m very pleased to report that Sydney the Alchemist will be our lead and narrator, supported by Jill, Adrian, and Eddie.

Q: Besides Rose Hathaway, which characters from Vampire Academy will probably make a cameo in the new series?
A: We’ll get to see Dimitri [Belikov]—which will make people happy, I’m sure. There will also be a visit from someone who’s become a surprise cult favorite: Abe Mazur, Rose’s shady but loveable father.

Q: What type of new research will you conduct for this spin-off that is different from what you did for Vampire Academy?
A: I’ve had to research a lot about Medieval Alchemists, as well as magic users from that era and Classical times. A lot of what Sydney’s people do was completely made up for the Vampire Academy series, but now that we’re delving into her past, it’s important to really flesh out the Alchemist organization and see what they’re all about. I love taking real folklore and mythology and then tweaking it. That’s how the vampires in this series came about.

Q: What are the writing challenges you will expect to encounter with this spin-off that you didn’t face with the original series?
A: With Vampire Academy, I was creating a completely new entity. There was no precedent or
background to worry about. Bloodlines is tricky because it has to connect to the original series and keep some consistencies. On the other hand, it’s still essentially a new project, and I’m having to get to know a new narrator for the first time in five years—which is difficult at times. It’s a balancing act of old and new.

Q: What advice can you give to writers who find themselves with the specific task of writing a spin-off?
A: This is still new to me, so I’m not sure my advice is the best yet! Probably I’d say what’s true for all storytelling: tell the story you’re passionate about. A spin-off binds you to certain rules, but as long as you love it and you aren’t trying too hard to conform to something, the writing will deliver.

Q: What do you recommend young writers to read?
A: Everything. I learned more about writing from reading good authors than I probably from formal classes. Read everything you can get your hands on, and pay attention to the writing. This is a really great time because there’s so much amazing YA out there. The genre wasn’t nearly so big (or of such quality) when I was growing up.

Q: Besides Bloodlines, what else are you working on?
A: My two adult series, Georgina Kincaid and Dark Swan, are both coming to a close soon, so I’m busy wrapping those up. Vampire Academy and Dark Swan are also being made into graphic novels that are coming out this year, so it’s been fascinating watching those projects develop.

Many of our readers are incredibly sad that the Vampire Academy series is over, how did it feel to end the series?
Probably not as sad for me as for everyone else!  It’s definitely hard to end a series you’ve put so much work into, absolutely.  But, when I first set out to write it, I always knew how the story was going to end, so there was a certain “rightness” about wrapping things up in Last Sacrifice.  Besides, thanks to Bloodlines, we’re not entirely leaving that world!  In some ways, I don’t even feel like VA is ending.  It’s just transforming.

While your fans are sad that Vampire Academy is over, they’re pretty geeked about your new series, Bloodines. Can you tell us a little about it?
Bloodlines takes place right after the events of Last Sacrifice.  The narrator of the story is Sydney the Alchemist, so we’ll get to see the vampire world through the eyes of a human.  It takes place in southern California, which is sunny and fun for humans—but not for vampires.

Will there be any familiar characters in Bloodlines?
Lots!  The main characters will be Sydney, Jill, Eddie, and Adrian.  You can also expect a few cameos from some other favorites from the Vampire Academy series.

There is a Vampire Academy graphic novel coming this summer (yay!), can you tell us about that project?
It’s a graphic novel adaptation of the first book in the VA series and will be out at the end of August.  Like all adaptations, a few parts were cut, but I worked with them on the script to make sure all the key elements stayed.  Emma Vieceli is doing the art for it (and future volumes) and has done a really beautiful job.

Ok, here’s a question I ask all folks I interview: I’ve noticed that most of the authors I follow on Twitter talk about the music they’re currently writing to. What kind of setting/atmosphere do you find most conducive to your writing?
I actually don’t listen to music while I write!  The setting most conducive to writing for me is a calm one without much noise.  If music’s playing, I get distracted and start listening to those words, not my own.  I need to be able to totally focus on the project I’m working on.

Who’s your favorite fictitious vampire (other than your own)?
You know…I’m not sure I can come up with one!  I really don’t read a lot of vampire books for fun or even watch a lot of vampire shows or movies.  I think I have a subconscious “don’t take your work home with you” attitude!  That being said, I like how this question asks for a fictitious vampire.  Now I’m going to have to think if I know any in real life…

What is your favorite vampire book/movie/show?
Of the few vampire books I’ve read, probably Rachel Caine’s Morganville Vampires series is my favorite.  I’ve only read a couple of them, but I just love her writing style.  I’m a big fan of her Weather Warden series too.  She’s one of those incredible writers who can run with any topic and make it fun to read.

I hear that you are part of a project which helps the victims in Japan. Can you tell us about it and what our readers can do to help?
It’s actually a group of authors who have donated autographed books for sale on eBay.  All the proceeds go to charities that the individual authors choose, though all are groups that are doing work in Japan.  Some of the charities include the American Red Cross, Shelterbox, and Doctors Without Borders.  The seller name is “booksthatgive”, and those who are interested can do a search on eBay to see what’s currently listed.

And finally, what other projects are you currently working on? Any goodies we should watch out for?
Most of my time is spent rotating between my three series.  In addition to Vampire Academy/Bloodlines, I also write two adult series—Dark Swan and Georgina Kincaid.  Both of those are wrapping up soon, so I’m working on those endings, along with polishing up Bloodlines.  Eventually, I’ll probably start another adult series, but I haven’t given that much thought yet!  One thing that readers can look forward to is Vampire Academy: The Ultimate Guide, which is coming out in November.  Author Michelle Rowen is doing most of the work on it, and it’s going to be a really fun compilation of all sorts of info from the VA world.
